Ancient town gets a facelift
THE ancient town of Sijing is about to undergo a facelift that will take five to 10 years to complete.
Under the plan, more than 15.5 hectares have been designated as protected areas, including 53 historic buildings related to former Shanghai notables such as Fudan University founder Ma Xiangbo (1840-1939), newspaper tycoon Shi Liangcai (1880-1934) and painter Fan Yunlin (1558-1641).
One overriding principle of the renovation is to preserve as many old houses, streets, lanes, bridges and rivers as possible.
Illegal structures in protected areas will be razed, and houses built during the 1970s and 80s will be kept as part of the town’s architectural timeline.
The project calls for rehabilitating 1,000 meters of riverside.
Songjiang folk culture and traditions will also be given prominence in the town.
They include the century-old Aliu dumpling, shadow plays, paper-cuts and Guangli pyramid-shaped dumplings.
