Tiny library makes big fuss of reading

A TINY library is causing a big fuss at the largest shopping mall in Putuo District.

Dozens of people eagerly waited in a queue to borrow books from the 1-squre-meter, novelty library in Global Harbor. Among them are white-haired elderly man, young intellectual and a woman with a small child in her arms. The teacher was surrounded by several children who listened intently. The library which set up last month has become a bit of a hit on the Internet.

The books for hire have been supplied, mainly, by the Youth League Committee of Putuo District. Citizens can borrow and keep the books for a week after filling in a library card.

In terms of the library’s popularity, the Youth League Committee also held a parental reading event, “Read A Good Book and Tell A Good Story” at the Global Harbor.

According one of the participants, surnamed Hong, she said she heard of the library through a friend’s WeChat moment.

“Every night before my son was 3 years old, we had a parental reading at home,” Hong said. “Reading is very helpful to his growth. He learns to concentrate, and also acquires much knowledge from the books. I hope the event can also help him take up the reading habit.”

The library is located on the fourth floor of the shopping mall. With wooden fencing, readers can indulge themselves. There are classic books including: “The Little Girl At the Window,” “Harry Potter,” “The Old Man and the Sea” and “The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.” A little square table, two little chairs and soft carpet are also offered to parents and children for reading.

Officials from the mall’s marketing department said that the 1-square-meter library makes good use of the idle space. They hope that children can experience the charm of reading while they have the fun of dining and playing in the mall.

Among the 300 or so books, more than 100 titles cover fairytales and ancient Chinese poetry offered by the Youth League Committee of Putuo District. Currently the library receives around 500 to 600 visitors, and over 30 books have been borrowed since its opening. Officials from the Youth League Committee said that the shopping mall has big crowds every day and it is also a frequent venue for young people.

The library hopes to attract more young people. The 1-square-meter concept has also been applied and extended to the office buildings for young white-collar workers. The committee says it will continue to provide services for the city’s young generation.
