Startups benefit from setting up in special zones

Located in the northwest of Shanghai, Putuo District possesses a series of advantages.

Its strategy of developing the shoreline of Suzhou Creek and establishing Taopu Technology Smart City, Zhenru Sub-center, Changfeng Eco-Business Park, Middle Ring Commercial Zone and Changshou Business Center has laid the groundwork for strong and sustainable development.

The district is a cradle for small and medium-sized enterprises, which account for more than 90 percent of companies in the district. As industrial restructuring deepens, these enterprises in return have become major engines to boost the local economy. The district government has focused on providing policy support in areas such as labor, venues and financing.

There are five district-level business incubators in Putuo — China 1912 Cultural and Creative Industrial Park, East China Normal University (National University) Science and Technology Park, Tanjia 28 Business Information Center, Shanghai Universal Software Park and Shanghai MTR Cloud Center. The first three are officially recognized as city-level model business incubation centers.

With a total area of 180,000 square meters, the centers in Putuo can provide office space to more than 600 startups at the same time, providing jobs to 15,000 people.

Meanwhile, the district government continues to renovate unused buildings into office space for entrepreneurs. Sub-districts such as Shiquan, Changfeng, Yichuan, Zhenru, and Caoyang have set up entrepreneurial zones, aiming to create a good environment and facilities for people to start businesses.

The total floor space of all entrepreneurial zones in Putuo now exceeds 13,000 square meters.

More than 3,000 people work at the 550 businesses that have successfully started in these zones.

The startups are eligible for a variety of all-round services to help them get started.

Micro and small businesses in the zones can enjoy tailored public service infrastructure and receive professional guidance regarding support policies.

Many entrepreneurial zones also run various events in different areas to help startups and improve services.
