Schoolmaster’s help puts spring in dancers’ step
Lu Qingfeng, vice principal of Yichuan High School, has been a hit with local residents since taking the post of deputy Party secretary of Zhaojia Garden Neighborhood Committee.
A woman fond of taking part in group dancing in public areas sent him a text during the Chinese New Year holiday in February, thanking him for relocating her amateur dancing team to Yichuan High School for practices.
Otherwise, the team would have disbanded due to a lack of dancing spaces in Zhaojia Garden Neighborhood.
Last year, nine leaders from district departments were dispatched to nine sub-districts to take charge in neighborhood committees. Lu is from the education department and Zhaojia Garden Neighborhood is at the northeast corner of Putuo District set up in 1970’s.
The amateur dancing team had conflicts with local residents over their music volume, as more than 20 danced in a public area at 7pm every evening. At first, locals threw vegetables or rubbish at them, later napkins and even babies’ excrement.
“It’s a pity these women have to abandon their hobby,” Lu said after getting details of the dispute.
He contacted the sports club in his school and discovered that it was looking for an amateur team to join. Since then, the dancing team has held its sessions in Yichuan High School.
“We have a nice environment and don’t have to mind the weather or local people’s complaints, and we can even join dancing competitions for school clubs,” said the head of the dancing team, a woman surnamed Chen.
In addition to Party affairs, education, culture and veteran cadre work, Lu has also made investigations into residents’ needs since taking the post six months ago.
Last month, Lu and his colleagues provided education policy consultation, organizing teacher volunteers to help students from poor families in their studies and gave family education lectures and enrollment consultations.
He also compiles newsletters for veteran cadres and gives lectures on campus safety and traditional culture.
Lu is in charge of six residential buildings in the community and through visits gets a clear picture of difficulties faced by residents.
