Returned ‘educated youth’ offers schooling aid

Sun Gengxiang’s family from Putuo District devote themselves to charity projects. Sun was an “educated youth” from Shanghai who was sent down to live and work in poverty-stricken rural areas in neighboring Anhui Province in the 1970s.
His days in Anhui’s rural areas taught him about hardship, says Sun.
A reunion event brought him and fellow “educated” youths back to Xiaojian Town, Mengcheng County, where they lived during that period.
Sun found that the area is still under-developed with schools and dormitories in poor condition, and many teachers leaving to find other jobs.
Sun was so shocked at this situation and he decided to donate 500,000 yuan (US$81,000) to the county to build a new school, and was involved in the site selection, design and construction of the three-story building.
The school was named Xianglong Hope School.
Sun’s family donates 30,000 yuan each year to reward outstanding students and teachers in the school, plus grants for poor students.
They also donated more than 300,000 yuan to the school to build a second teaching building and a kindergarten in 2006.
And in 2008, they donated 300,000 yuan to the county to set up a charity foundation.
Then in 2013, the family inked a 10-year poverty-assistance agreement worth 5 million yuan, providing 500,000 yuan each year to Mengcheng to 2023 to help poor students and cover education costs.
During the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, Sun spent about 400,000 yuan to invite more than 500 outstanding figures from all walks of life of Mengcheng and representatives of students to Shanghai to tour the Expo exhibitions.
The family have also worked extensively to help poor and lonely seniors.
