Putuo a step closer to being barrier-free

Life for the physically disabled and elderly in Putuo District is being improved, as all roads, historic neighborhoods and key public buildings are now equipped with a barrier-free facilities.

The Construction Administrative Commission is also sending workers to repair or replace old or broken barrier-free facilities.

The commission installed escalators at the overpass between Zhongshan Road N. and Jiaotong Road and said that residents welcomed their efforts.

The commission also helps old neighborhoods to add barrier-free facilities and has completed more than 30,000 meters of wheelchair ramps, about 260,000 meters of handrails since 2003. It also completed one of the longest wheelchair ramps in Shanghai, and, at a length of 64 meters, the longest in Putuo so far, it is located at Deyiyuan Neighborhood.

High barrier-free standards to new infrastructures such as Changfeng Ecological Business Park, district maternity and infant health institute, the fourth affiliated middle school of East China Normal University and the Parkside Plaza are also being implemented.

The commission will focus on barrier-free facility construction in the development of Zhenru Area as a sub-center of Shanghai and Taopu Science and Technology Smart City.
