Popular imported goods store sales soaring

Ever since its opening on December 31, business has been booming at the Putuo Zhonghuan outlet of the Waigaoqiao Direct Imported Goods shopping center.

It is one of the moves the district has advocated after it was listed as one of the demonstration zones in Shanghai to amplify the impact of Shanghai’s pilot Free Trade Zone. The Waigaoqiao shopping center in FTZ has turned out to be a big hit with local shoppers who come across the city to buy the imported goods for cheapness and freshness.

The Putuo outlet, with a floor area of about 1,200 square meters on Jinshajiang Road, offers more than 4,700 kinds of foods covering fruit, raw meat, seafood, snacks, wine and dairy, along with skincare products.

Recently several more outlets of the DIG shopping center have been launched in Jinshan, Qingpu and Baoshan districts and in Pudong New Area.

Yu Le, manager of the Putuo outlet, told Shanghai Daily that most its customers are residents of Putuo and neighboring Changning districts.

“Seafoods, raw meat and fruit are among the most popular goods in our store,” Yu said.

So far, the outlet has achieved an average daily turnover of about 80,000 yuan (US$12,814). On weekends, it soars to 200,000 yuan. It has been popular with local residents for its competitive prices, freshness and quality.

Xu Ziyan, a retired teacher, said she has been waiting a long time for the outlet.

“Food safety has always been an issue in China,” said Xu. “I want to buy some imported snacks and yogurt for my little granddaughter. Compared with some domestic food, they don’t have a lot of food additives and have a more original flavor.”

Alex Huang, a young professional, bought Argentine shrimp, lobster and crab for a seafood hot pot party.

“The outlet provides people in the neighborhood with more shopping alternatives,” said Huang. “It is no longer a time and energy-consuming work for us to buy fresh imported goods.”
