Nurse goes beyond the call of duty
Yu Jingzi has been a nurse at Putuo Hospital for more than 20 years and is now leading a team to help more patients in need.
Many patients come to Putuo Hospital because of her reputation and specifically ask to be taken care of by Yu’s team. She earned this trust by paying attention to the tiniest details and placing the wellbeing of patients above everything else.
She also developed a method of eight principles in doing her job.
“As times are changing, the patients now have more demands for medical care, and the principles not only are throughout our work, but also adapt to the higher standards,” she said.
When it’s the Lantern Festival, the team brings rice dumplings to the patients. Now they also bring musicians to come and perform for the patients, something they appreciate while being stuck on a hospital bed all day long.
For senior patients, getting a haircut is a problem because they can’t go out. Yu contacted barbers and found several willing to donate their time to give free haircuts. She also arranged to have books and magazines delivered to the patients.
“Volunteering is part of my job,” Yu said.
In 2011, the hospital established a “Yu Jingzi Volunteer Workshop” to lead a team of volunteers helping those in need. Yu also uses her free time to go and talk with seniors who have stayed in the hospital for a long time and have few visitors.
When it’s Chinese New Year, Yu visits some families and students with financial difficulties and offers help. Under her advice, the workshop signed with Qixing School to open a green channel in the hospital for their students, as well as setting up hotlines and volunteer service stations.
Now the workshop has more than 900 registered volunteers who organize loads of activities. They also collaborate with universities to provide psychological and rehabilitation help to patients.
