Leading bridge-cable firm relies on innovation

TANG Liang is a successful entrepreneur whose company, Ossen Group, is a global leader in bridge-cable manufacturing, with annual sales exceeding tens of billions of yuan.

Many of the bridge cables were engraved with the company’s name, from Nanpu Bridge and Yangpu Bridge in Shanghai to more than half of the major bridges over the Yangtze River and even some landmark bridges overseas.

The company holds more than 100 technical patents and has won numerous awards in China. The company exports more than half of China’s prestressed materials used to build bridges, buildings, high-speed railways and offshore oil-drilling platforms.

As the founder and CEO, Tang said that building a business in manufacturing is real and have no room for shortcuts.

“You must be persistent, fight hard, and have the spirit to always reach for the top,” he said.

Building bridge cables is technology-intensive, as the products must be able to withstand all kinds of pressures for a century or longer.

In the 1980s, the Nanpu Bridge became China’s first suspension bridge.

Confidence in quality

The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, originally built in the 1930s, had a new span opened on September 2, 2013, after the original was damaged in a 1989 earthquake. It is currently the widest bridge in the world. This new landmark in the United States, built in a seismic belt, can withstand a magnitude 8.0 earthquake.

Ossen Group won the bid for building the cables of the bridge. It’s among the 13 companies in the world capable of manufacturing them.

“We were very confident, no matter if it was the quality of our prestressed materials or the technologies of manufacturing the cables, we were among the best. But to make ‘made in China’ into ‘made smart in China,’ a company must compete with global leaders, and that’s the reason we entered the bid,” Tang said.

Ossen Group’s development relies on technological innovation and core technologies. Three concepts hold the key to a sustainable development of the company, according to Tang.

Willing to invest big

The first is never relax and be willing to invest big. The second is having an international vision, with specific goals. The third is building a team with senior technicians leading a younger generation.

Ossen Group always sends its new bridge cable technologies to test in leading third-party labs overseas. It costs the company millions of yuan, but also provides insight as well as opportunities to communicate with other companies. Tang sends technicians abroad to attend conferences and talk with leading experts.

Born in Shanghai, Tang’s father was a leading expert in aerospace while his mother was a math teacher. His parents held high standards, which influenced him to seek perfection in everything he does.

Tang majored in metallic materials in college, studied finance for graduate school, economics for his PhD and researched renewable energy for post-doctorate studies. The rich academic background gave him a broad international vision that a successful company not only relies on cutting-edge technologies, but also young people to carry on the torch.

“For a technology company, talent is the treasure of all treasures, and the advantage of having an echelon team of talents is the best weapon,” Tang said.
