Gallery, fests put spotlight on art, culture

calligraphy, paintings, traditional operas and operas took center stage during the one-month Suzhou Creek Culture Festival, hosted by Putuo District and subdistricts and towns.

Tang Zhaoji Art Gallery, a tribute to visual artist Tang Zhaoji who is best known for his painting of peonies, opened on October 31 in Changzheng Town. More than 100 artifacts created by Tang, including calligraphies, carvings, ceramics and Yixing Clay Teapots are being showcased, as well as painting with full colors using multiple techniques that combine Chinese and Western styles.

The art gallery took three years to complete and the Changzheng Community Art Activity Center, where the gallery is located, invited a professional troupe to play Kunqu Opera Peony Pavilion, which won long applause from the residents.

The center also hosted a week-long arts performance concluding with a folk song concert on October 30.

Yichuan Subdistrict hosted a city-wide Peking Opera contest attracting fans from all over Shanghai, which closed on November 1. The event, in which more than 1,000 young, middle-aged and elderly fans joined, is a part of the Citizen Arts Festival. A total of 46 finalists entered the final competition on October 31 and November 1.

The subdistrict also hosted a traditional opera performance.

Liu Haisu Art Gallery’s Putuo branch and Putuo District Art Gallery hosted a children and youth art exhibition from October 31.

The exhibits were selected from about 10,000 applications from children and youth in the city. A total of 181 youth and children finalists also took a live-painting test under the watchful eyes of experts.

A total of 54 paintings received prizes and an additional 124 paintings were selected to be displayed in the gallery.

Meanwhile, Taopu Town opened its community cultural arts festival with a ceremony on October 30 that combined chorus, traditional Kungfu, Shanghai Opera and other arts.
