Artist takes self-portraits to amazing new heights
ARTIST Ma Liuming is hosting a solo exhibition showcasing his recent paintings based on his performance art from the 1990s.
Since 1997, Ma has made a series of self-portraits. The photos were taken in public spaces with Ma sitting on a chair with an expressionless face. Whenever someone came into the frame or did something to him or the empty chair beside him, he took a picture using a shutter release cord.
The exhibition “A Tenth of a Second” took its name from the title of an essay written by Duan Jun and from the shutter speed Ma used when taking the self-portraits.
Ma started selecting some of the self-portraits in 2012 and turning them into paintings. The images have been reconstructed and recomposed, acquiring an absurd and conflicting nature that transcends reality and time.
There are 13 canvas works and a video titled “Fen — Ma in Dusseldorf” on display.
