Airplane engineer with passion to write
FROM folding a paper plane to actually working on building an airplane, Xie Kunxing has had big dreams ever since he was young.
He didn’t even study aviation in college, but he never stopped searching for a way to make his dream come true.
In the 1970s, China started “project 708” to research and develop its own aircraft. Shanghai was set as the main base for the project and that’s when Xie started his career in aviation.
Upon joining the team, he worked on various projects. Without any prior knowledge, Xie started from scratch and learned everything.
He’s also passionate about writing. Since retiring as an engineer, Xie has been writing short stories and plays about trendy social issues like care for seniors who live alone, telephone fraud and more.
One of his stories about seniors who live alone won second prize in Putuo’s writing competition.
“I was very good at Chinese class in school and my essays were praised by the teachers, and I read my essays to everyone in class. It wasn’t a big thing, but I’ve always enjoyed writing,” he said.
He also attends book club meetings regularly to meet new friends who share the same passion for reading and writing, and also to improve his skills.
The team in his community invites instructors from Shanghai Theater Academy to help edit the plays written by the club’s members.
When he learned about the writing competition for this year’s Shanghai Citizens Art Festival, he wrote an article about his experience working on the aviation project.
“I was born in Shanghai, grew up in Shanghai, the city made me who I am today, and I would like to do more for the city,” Xie said.
