A holiday filled with joy and laughter

DURING the Spring Festival, Putuo District’s shopping malls staged elaborately planned special events for their customers. Citizens and tourists experienced a colorful and orderly holiday.

This year, the Spring Festival started from February 8 and the celebrations traditionally ended on Monday with the Lantern Festival which falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month.

Thanks to the fine weather during the holiday, many citizens chose to spend time outside. Shopping malls and strips in the district seized this opportunity and featured original events that showcased folk traditions and culture.

New-year symphony, drum dance, Japanese Awa Odori, British bagpipe performance, Italian opera, American jazz music and French chanson were put on stage at Global Harbor. In the central hall, people took photos with peach trees which represents happiness. The monkey mammon and flash mobs also caught people’s eye.

‘Monkey King’

Bailian Zhonghuan shopping mall launched an LED light show “Monkey King” in the square. A six-meter-tall LEGO giraffe model stood outside the Parkside Plaza to attract children’s attention. Imago built a lively monkey garden for customers’ entertainment.

As living standards and incomes improve, people’s idea of consumption changes, and more importance is place on cultural activities and entertainment.

The large indoor theme park “JOYPOLIS” celebrated its grand opening in Global Harbor on February 6th. The 8,300-square-meter park boasts 21 high-tech recreation facilities developed by international electronic game companies.

Cinemas in the district sold discounted tickets to let citizens enjoy the latest movies and amusement places like KTV also reported strong holiday business.

Catering enterprises were marketing their services on Weibo and Wechat and were able to report a 10-percent rise in turnover compared to the previous year, according to statistics.

Gold sales were another highlight. Monkey commemorative coins and gold ornaments were in high demand. Customer flow and sales rose obviously, likely due to the promotional events.

Cultural events

Meanwhile, the district also saw many impressive cultural activities during the holiday. Between January 28th and Lantern Festival, more than 30 events including theatrical performances, film screenings, painting and calligraphy exhibition and girly folk activities were held.

The district library organized a couplet exhibition to showcase traditional culture. The district’s cultural center and activity center conducted folk activities such as writing couplets and invited members of the district calligraphy association to write down their best wishes for the new year.

The libraries, cultural centers, museums and exhibition halls kept their regular service and opening hours during the holiday.

The Putuo art gallery hosted an exhibit with Chinese painting, Russian oil painting and a calligraphy exhibition.

Special performances like Yueju and Huju opera and folk art festival organized by district cultural center brought people laughter and happiness. A mobile movie team screened noncommercial films in the community.
