Using hi-tech to tell Chinese cultures and values

A public WeChat account run by some Pudong civil servants in their spare time to promote China’s traditional cultural values and national identity has attracted myriad followers.

“The workshop on Jinxiu Road” debuted three years ago. It has rapidly gained popularity and its comments and posts are widely shared.

‘Good at speaking’

One recent hit was “Incredible as a matter of course — I'm at the front line of a major crackdown on traffic offences and environmental violations.”

The post received thousands of visits on its first day and has received wide and positive feedback from the ordinary public.

Before that, a post by Shen Xiaoming, then Party secretary of Pudong New Area, received more than 100,000 visits immediately after it was posted ahead of the Teachers’ Day last year. The article “My three teachers” also attracted the attention of local doctors and teachers — Shen was a doctor before he went into politics.

A post “What is culture?” explains the concept of culture in China from a unique perspective which makes readers thinking deeply.

“We usually get positive feedback,” says Jiang Hai, head of the workshop. Jiang works at the united front work department of the Communist Party of China Pudong New Area committee.

Li Youlin, deputy director of CPC Pudong committee’s general office, says the workshop attracts followers and has influence because “it is good at speaking.”

Weng Zuliang, Party secretary of Pudong, firmly believes the workshop has an important role to play. Almost 200 people write for the workshop — 90 percent of them civil servants.

‘Spiritual home’

Members of the workshop see it as a platform for everyone to show their talents, or just to share their thoughts.

“The Workshop on Jinxiu Road” is not simply a public WeChat account but a “spiritual home” of Pudong civil servants.

The online workshop has had more than 20 columns, including some for cadres who are sent to aid Tibet/Xinjiang to spread knowledge of the local customs of the two regions.

Workshop chief Jiang finished his masterpiece “The reason why we are — the cultural origin of the differences between China and the West” in 2014 and spent another two years writing “Chinese Nation: 5,000 years of cultural self-confidence” in his spare time.

The latter book is not only a brief history of the formation of the Chinese nation, but also the history of the development of Chinese cultural self-confidence. It is expected to be issued by the Beijing People’s Publishing House soon.

“During the past few years, I have been learning to write for almost three or four hours every night. I hope to use the comparative analysis of Chinese and Western culture to illustrate the broadness and richness of Chinese culture,” Jiang says.
