Pudong flexes muscles with new sports facilities
ON the site of the former Africa Joint Pavilion during the World Expo Shanghai 2010, the largest city sports complex in China has been put into use. It offers a variety of facilities and training courses for modern pentathlon, triathlon, fencing, basketball, track and field, badminton, yoga, dancing and gymnastics.
The 35,000 square-meter Vango Sports Center also has the largest fencing training center in the world and China’s first indoor velodrome.
The fencing venue complies with international standards and offers professional training courses. Several of its on-site coaches are former members of China’s Olympic fencing team. Trial lessons with foils and protective equipment are available.
The youth league of the Expo Site has established a youth center at the complex to host activities for teenagers.
Shanghai Vango Sports Center aims to provide local residents a new sports venue, while also implementing a new business model for the operation of sports stadiums. A café, a nail salon, a florist, a restaurant and shops selling sporting gear, fitness equipment and active apparel are all located in the center.
One of the biggest shareholders of Shanghai Vango Sports Center is Vango Fencing, a Chinese fencing and training institution. This institution has set up several training clubs in other cities, including Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.
Other cultural enterprises in the Expo Area are talking about the possibility of forming the Expo Site Cultural Alliance, which would include the China Art Museum, Mercedes-Benz Arena, Shanghai Oriental Sports Center and 27 other cultural venues and companies.
Vango is one among the enterprises partnering with the Expo Area Development Administration while the others include Shanghai Printing Corporation, Shanghai Oriental Pearl Group, Shanghai Digital Industry Group and Shanghai 21st Century Minsheng Art Museum.
