Lingang aims to run for a hi-tech, green future

WHEN nearly 2,000 people set off on a run to greet the sunshine on the first day of 2017 in the southeast end of Shanghai, the blueprint for the development of Lingang in the next five years was also mapped out.

Runners kicked off a 7.6 kilometer race at 5:30am when the darkness was awaiting the first ray of sunshine to mark the new year.

The health run which started from the West Islet of Dishui Lake and ended at Guanhai Park had no time limit or record to break. Neon tracks led the way for runners who toured around the lake amid the fading starlight.

The 2017 New Year Run of Lingang offered runners much larger space in comparison with previous years. The size of the field this year was also expanded to 2,000 runners from 500 initially.

The service level was greatly improved. Organizers prepared a warm-up area, on-site first aid and security checks.

Runners received race kits ahead of the competition and gift packs at the terminal when they embraced the sunshine with their families, friends or lovers.

There was also a dragon dance, flying peace doves and facilities so runners could mail postcards to send their best New Year wishes.

The New Year Run of Lingang is expected to be held regularly as local tourism flourishes. The run alongside Dishui Lake may attract more people because of its location, the organizers said.

And Lingang’s future blueprint has been mapped out. The area will be included in the construction of Shanghai’s science technology innovation center and will become a cluster of “intelligent” manufacturing.

Shanghai will offer 5 billion yuan (US$720 million) to fund smart manufacturing in Lingang.

Lingang itself will subsidize 10-30 percent of the potential investment from companies in key smart manufacturing projects in strategic innovative industries such as robotics, new energy, offshore engineering equipment and civil aviation.

It will offer free rent for research and development centers in smart manufacturing as well as subsidize 10-30 percent of investment for these centers.

Based on a modern equipment manufacturing industry, Lingang will become a new town featuring science and technology, culture, finance, trade and tourism.

A low-carbon, ecologically friendly, livable and sustainable city with blue skies, clean water and surrounded by tall trees will come into birth.

Officials say green is always the theme of the new town’s development.

Meanwhile, Lingang is going to be a popular tourists’ destination for the Yangtze River Delta.

It will develop tourism products featuring Dishui Lake and maritime and ecological attractions. The picturesque lake and the east shore will be the core area in the development of the local landscape.

Pavilions and MICE facilities for maritime cultural exchange and international conferences, exhibitions and performances will be built on the western and northern islets. Sports events such as sailing, rowing, running and cycling will be held regularly.

Lingang aims to attract a wide range of talent and create a space where people can live comfortably. Residents will enjoy preferential housing prices, low rent apartments or even housing subsidies.

Apart from affordable housing, Lingang is developing a low-carbon, green public transport system.

Buses serving the streets at the main urban area of Lingang are no-emission electric ones. By 2020, public transport throughout Lingang will switch to 100 percent emission-free.

Lingang has also launched an electric car sharing scheme under which drivers can rent an EV for 30 yuan an hour. Dozens of EVs are available and users can download an app to their smartphones to book and pay for the service.

In the future, Lingang will make further progress in promoting a medium-capacity traffic system, electric buses, cabs, EV sharing, e-government vehicles and bicycle sharing to create a green, efficient, smooth and better public transport system.
