Building, reshaping new area

WORK on 143 key construction projects in Pudong will be carried out this year — including 92 involving urban infrastructure, district officials say.

Meanwhile, preparation will be underway for another 34 projects such as the extension of S3 Expressway.

The 143 key projects, worth total investment of over 16 billion yuan (US$2.3 billion), cover the aspects in transport, public service, as well as environmental and social work developments.

Twenty-one are in road-building developments that account for a third of all road construction in Pudong slated for the 13th Five-Year-Plan period (2016-2020).

This year, construction will start on 33 projects, including the rapid transit system on Jiyang Road, the Hunan Expressway and the Punan Hospital.

By the year’s end, work is expected to complete on 25 key projects, including Shenjiang Road S. and the Pudong Workers’ Culture Palace, and basically finish on another 13 projects, including Yangjing Road N., Guanglan Road and Sanlin Road.

Meanwhile, structural engineering of 71 projects to be carried out in 2017 will involve deep excavation, tunneling and cutting-across.

The construction will be very difficult, facing high risks and leading to environmental impact, according to the officials.

Apart from the engineering, land acquisition, local residents’ relocation, planning and the balancing of water services will be major issues, officials add.

They note that a total of 72 projects will require land acquisition and the relocation of residents. About 1,800 families and 700 firms will be moved.

By the second quarter, land for construction will be prepared for the projects of Metro lines 10, 13, 14 and 18. Land required for dredging the channel between the Dazhi River and Luchao Port will be prepared by the third quarter.

Last year, Pudong mapped out 109 projects with investment totaling 20 billion yuan, a record since the World Expo Shanghai in 2010.

The construction of 12 major works was completed by the end of last year while 17 projects kicked off construction. Citywide, Pudong ranked No.1 in 2016 for its progress in the construction of key projects.

Yanggao Road S. renovation

After the renovation project, the number of driving lanes in the Yanggao Road S. section between Pujian Road and Century Avenue will increase to 12 from the current 8-10.

The Yanggao Road Tunnel will serve vehicles passing through the area and enable a rapid transit between Century Avenue and the Inner Ring Road.

Surface roads will cater to transport within the surrounding business areas and external access.

The project is almost two kilometers long and 60-70 meters wide. Construction was started in June 2015 and is expected to be finished next June. The total investment was estimated at 2.26 billion yuan.

The extension engineering of the east-west ‘passage’

From the Pudong exit of the Yan’an Road E. Tunnel, running though Century Avenue, Lujiazui Road E. and Pudong Avenue to Jinqiao Road, the project includes a 6.1km section between the tunnel exit and Longju Road. It combines underground and surface roads with 4-6 lanes.

The section from Longju Road through Jinqiao Road is above the ground and 1.7km long. Six stations of Metro Line 14 and tracks linking them are being built along the route at the same time.

The project started in December 2007 and was planned to run through December 2020.

After the completion of the project, traffic flow on the Bund in Puxi and in the central business district of Lujiazui in Pudong is expected to improve.

Metro Line 14

The east-west Metro line is a convenient link between the northwest part of Shanghai, Pudong and downtown. It is a heavyweight project in a new round of the city’s infrastructure construction and expected to be one of the busiest and most crowded Metro lines after lines 1 and 2.

The 39km Metro line has 31 stations. Its Pudong section is around 17km and has 14 stations, five of which are transfer stations linking Metro lines 2, 4, 6 and the planned Line 18 and the extended Metro Line 9.

Pudong Workers’ Culture Palace

As a destination for education, training, conferences, exhibitions, cultural exchanges and leisure, the Pudong Workers’ Culture Palace will be built in the Puxing community.

The main building will have eight floors above the ground and a basement. It will be 40m high and cover 28,057 square meters.

Nanhui ecological project

Around 95 hectares of green spaces will be built while another 203 hectares of green space will be renovated in line with the approach of the project. Sited in Kangqiao Town, Nanhui, a 500m wide green belt that extends 10km will be built by the end of the year.

Featuring natural water system, wetlands and countryside views, it will become a public multifunction green space for ecological protection, landscape views, fitness and leisure activities, cultural entertainment, public services and disaster prevention.

Jinke Road

The construction of a new road section between Zhangjiabang River and Yanggao Road N. adopts a layout of six fast lanes plus two secondary lanes. The new road will intersect Jinxiu Road E., Jinqiao Road, Chuanqiao Road, Yunqiao Road, Xinjinqiao Road and Zheqiao Road, and connect with Jinhai Road and Yanggao Road N. All the intersections are included in the construction while a viaduct will be built at the north end of new road.

Starting from 180 meters to the south of Zhangjiabang River, Jinke Road, 50 meters in width, is planned to reach Yanggao Road N. After completion, it will be another south-to-north thoroughfare to improve the traffic condition of Middle Ring Road.
