Women honored for achievements
MINHANG women who have made noteworthy contributions to society were awarded by the district government to mark International Women’s Day this month.
The recipients’ work spanned education, medicine, science, public security and business management.
Among the honorees was Sheng Shumin, a policewoman at the Hongqiao Police Station and director of its foreigner services center in Shanghai. The office handles cases and paperwork related to expats.
Sheng, who speaks fluent English and Korean, said she has personally handled more than 100 expat matters.
“Being a policewoman was my childhood dream,” she said. “I was the only one in my master’s degree class who chose public security as a career, and I feel very proud.”
Another award winner was Lu Yi, who has worked with the Minhang District Agricultural Technology Service Center since 2009. Her team sent vegetable seeds on a space mission to research the effects of weightlessness and high radiation.
As a result, three new varieties of “space vegetables” have come into the market. They are larger and more nutritious.
“Agriculture is fun,” she said. “It is truly magic to find new ways to improve vegetables.”
Other individual award winners included Yang Xiaoyan, director of the Shanghai Aihao Children Rehabilitation Center; Xiao Liping, director of the Minhang Maternal and Childcare Hospital; and Chen Chun, general manager of the Hub.
Several organizations were also honored for their inclusion of women in prominent positions, including the care unit of the nephrology department at the No. 5 People’s Hospital and the No. 5 Civil Court of the Minhang District People’s Court, said the district government.
