Woman returns to city to chase her bakery dreams
A Wu Mei, an ethnic girl from Minhang’s less developed partnering city of Baoshan, Yunnan Province, has returned to Shanghai to further her education.
Six years ago she received medical treatment in Shanghai with help from the Meilong voluntary group.
After falling down and injuring her legs, leaving her in constant pain, the voluntary group heard of her plight and invited her to Shanghai for treatment.
At the time she was very young.
Her father had died and her mother fled, leaving her to be raised by her brother and his wife.
After traveling 2,800 kilometers, she finally arrived in Shanghai. Travel and medical fees were covered by the group.
She was then diagnosed with hemangioma and was treated successfully by doctors at Renji Hospital.
Now healthy, she can move ahead in life.
In September, she enrolled in a three-year program at a vocational school in Jinshan District, where she studies the art of bakery.
She no longer feels alone living in a place far away from home.
Volunteers from Minhang are still in touch, assuring her wellbeing. The school has offered her a tuition discount.
