We are set to get ‘smart’ at home
A center where people can experience the “smart future” opened this month in the Minhang District.
Set up a mock residential apartment, the Minhang Life Experience Center site on Xinhang Road is filled with more than 40 technology inventions that portend a dramatic transformation in the daily life of tomorrow.
Clever mattress
One innovation, a mattress that can record the vital signs of someone lying on it, has drawn the most attention from visitors to the center. Sensors in the mattress record pulse and respiratory rates, and if something untoward is detected, an alarm goes off.
“I like the idea very much,” said Pei Xinyu, a visitor who gazed at the high-tech bed with wonderment. “I always worry if my parents are okay at night because both of them have problems with high blood pressure and their hearts.”
In the living room of the “apartment,” there’s a sofa that warms up on a cold day as soon as someone sits on it. A painting hanging on the opposite wall and the carpet underneath the sofa are fitted with sensors, and an embedded infrared heating system is triggered to adjust room temperature when anyone sits on the couch.
There certainly is plenty at the center to provoke “oohs” and “aahs” from visitors. There’s an electric cooker that can cook four dishes and a soup on the power of 1-kilowatt hour. There’s a therapeutic machine that can help treat cerebral and cardiovascular diseases at home on a daily basis.
Developed in Minhang
Product developers are on hand at the center to provide visitors information if they want details about functions, usage or even direct-sales orders.
The Minhang District Science and Technology Committee said more than 80 percent of the products displayed in the center were developed by Minhang-based companies.
“After the idea of creating an ‘Intellectual Minhang’ was introduced four years ago, companies in the district started to develop products to make life easier and save energy,” said Zhao Shiying, committee deputy director. “The center highlights the outcomes of that effort so far.”
App for smart community
Meanwhile, the district has released an application for mobile devices that provides government services information in 14 different categories, including health, education, traffic, marriage registration and care for senior citizens.
For example, a parent can check a child’s school schedule, exam results and even lunch menu on the app. Patients can be advised of waiting times in hospitals.
Zhao said the district is working on a comprehensive information database so that government departments can deliver resources more efficiently.
“Education, medical care, traffic and other government services will continue to be the backbone of the project as we move toward becoming a smart community,” said Zhao.
