The accent is green in district initiatives

MINHANG is planning on a greener future, with plans afoot to extend forested areas, greenbelts and parkland to 18 percent of the district, covering 10 different towns.

The green initiative is part of the district’s current Five-Year Plan (2016-2020).

“There are enough skyscrapers and concrete in the town of Hongqiao,” said Hongqiao Town Party secretary Lu Guoqing. “What we need are more trees.”

Qinshuihua Street, once a popular snack street, now only exists in memories. The site has been demolished to make way for a 2.7-hectare park, with playgrounds, bamboo, trees and ponds.

Plans to turn more than 133 hectares of green in this bustling district in just one year are a formidable task. Redevelopment will include the creation of a 10.8-kilometer greenbelt along Suzhou Creek, the construction of six city parks in Pujiang Town and one in Xinzhuang Town, and the planting of an apricot grove in Meilong Town.

Most of the projects will begin this autumn and are scheduled to be completed within 12 months.

A new park near the Yindu Metro Station has been opened to the public after a year of work. It includes a tennis court, two basketball courts, a jogging track, fitness area and parking space for 110 vehicles.

“This 24-hour city park provides both parking to Metro commuters and a place for local residents to work out and improve their health,” said Cai Jingfa, vice director of the Xuhui District Administrative Department of Afforestation.

Plans for green areas differ from town to town. Many of the proposed new parks will be built in more rural areas, where leisure recreation sites are lacking.

As the largest rural area in the Minhang District, Pujiang Town is planning for 67 hectares of new trees and shrubs, without destroying any cropland. Cypress pines and dawn redwoods will be the preferred trees for planting.

“We want to blend a green environment with the idea of people having fun outdoors,” said Party secretary Lu.
