The Happy Dance Fitness Team
This group from Hongqiao Town used to gather together to practice aerobics. Once its members moved into dancing, its numbers swelled to more than 1,000.
In 2007, group founder Shi Rongxun choreographed what she called the “happy dance.” Members practiced the dance in the town’s Huanghua Road Square.
Shi used the power source from her electric motorcycle to provide music and lighting for the group.
“Like many other dance groups, we didn’t have much experience controlling the lights and music volumes,” said Shi. “So there were a lot of complaints from nearby residents about noise.”
The square has since been refurbished to accommodate the dancers. Solar lights have fixed on-off times, cutting out at an hour early enough to ensure quiet when local residents want to sleep. A portable power source was also installed so that dancers could use lower-volume stereos.
“After the changes, the complaints ended,” said Shi. “We feel more carefree and happy in the square now.”
