Senior citizens to receive levels of care according to their needs
Minhang District is adopting a tiered system of care for senior residents, who comprise 31 percent of the registered population.
Of the 360,000 residents 60 years or older, about 20,000 suffer from cognitive disorders needing a high level of professional care.
Under the tiered system, a facility to help those with cognitive disorders opened in Beiqiao Town six months ago, the first of its kind in Shanghai.
In additional to addressing daily needs, the facility provides multidisciplinary care, including training, rehabilitation and social activities.
To assist older people who live at home but need some care, the district is establishing day-care centers in communities, where the elderly can go to eat, do exercises and engage in music therapy and other activities.
The district is also upgrading existing nursing homes.
In Gumei Subdistrict, the community restaurant in a service center for the elderly provides meals that are both tasty and low-cost. Menus are available for those with special dietary needs.
The center also teaches seniors how to monitor their own health and keeps e-files on their medical conditions.
In the Jiangchuan area, where the elderly comprise 40 percent of the population, a facility has been established to provide a continuum of care for people as they age and grow more frail.
At the end of last month, a fair was held in Zhuanqiao Town in observance of the traditional Double Ninth Festival on the lunar calendar. It’s a time when people show respect for the old. Senior citizens were served traditional steamed cakes and viewed chrysanthemums, a flower that symbolizes longevity.
