Schools begin creative new term

Attention all students! School is back in session.

This autumn, 15 new schools opened their doors in Minhang, with promises of innovative educational services for the young.

One of them, Shanghai Minhang Foreign Language Middle School in Hongqiao, kicked off its first day of classes with the French song “Vole, Vole, Vole, Papillon!” as background music.

The song is about butterflies spreading their wings to explore the world, and that’s exactly what educators hope will happen with students at the school.

The pupils will be taught two foreign languages and will have the opportunity to attend high schools in the US or UK.

The school, which has boarding facilities, also runs traditional Chinese curricula alongside the bilingual cultural experience.

Co-founded by the Shanghai International Studies University and the Minhang district government, the foreign language school has recruited native speakers to teach English courses.

“Our goal is to cultivate in students a thorough knowledge of both Chinese and Western cultures,” said Wu Jinyu, headmaster of the school.

Another new school in the district, the Maqiao-Wenlai Foreign Language Elementary School in Maqiao Town, has an equally innovative approach to learning.

Teachers from English-speaking countries will give lectures two afternoons every week. The English courses are for both students and Chinese faculty.

“We hope to imbue an appreciation of English culture in our students,” said headmaster Wang Qinrong. “Language experiences will not be limited to classes but will carry over into after-class activities as well.”

Meanwhile, the Shanghai No. 2 High School based in the Xuhui District has opened a new branch in Meilong, Minhang. It is the first senior high school in that area.

The new campus boasts among the best facility and faculties in Shanghai. There will be ongoing exchanges between the Minhang and Xuhui campuses, including teachers who will hold classes at both sites.

“We want to share the high-quality educational resources,” said headmaster Wang Minzheng.

Separately, the Shanghai Theater Academy will set up an affiliate in Pujiang Town. The school is expected to provide basic education on theater and drama, providing a wider platform for cultivating new talent.

As the new school term opens, high schools in Shanghai have pledged to work more closely with elementary schools in Minhang and other districts to provide faculty training and improved curricula.
