School compiles a handy handbook
TWENTY elementary school students in Minhang helped compile an illustrated handbook on how preschool children and their parents need to prepare psychologically for school.
The book “Be an Elementary School Student: I’m Ready” was the idea of Deng Zichang, a teacher with the Fudan-Vanke Experimental School.
“For the past two decades, I always tried to find such a book to recommend to new students and parents, but I failed,” said Deng. “All the books I found focused on school subjects rather than on the role shift for children.”
Deng compiled notes and essays into articles and invited her students from different grades to draw illustrations for the book. The children painted school life through their own eyes, depicting changes in their life as they grew up.
The book included a going-to-school list for children and parents, and an after-school list for children to check what they might have forgotten to take with them before returning home.
It also contained 12 stories to explain how children can handle the experience of going to school for the first time.
“Parents need to be aware of safety issues, communications ability and problem-solving,” said Deng.
A contribution from the Shanghai Culture Press House paid for publication of the handbook. It was received enthusiastically, with Deng recently holding an autograph event.
