Providing support services
The volunteer service station of Xinhong Subdistrict, located at the busy commercial area of The Hub, was the nearest in Minhang to the expo venue and went into high gear several weeks before the trade fair opened.
Sun Simin was among the volunteers to assist the event again this year.
“We fielded all kinds of questions in the course of a day, like asking for directions or the location of battery banks,” Sun said.
She did volunteer duties after work every day. As soon as she arrived, she donned the green vest uniform so that they could be easily identified in the crowds.
Because most people asking for help were usually passengers coming from the nearby Hongqiao transportation hub, Sun made a general tour of that area to familiarize herself with road and pedestrian routes.
“I felt a great sense of fulfillment when I could answer visitors’ questions,” Sun said.
More than 900 young people like Sun signed up to work for the event.
The duties they performed included information and guide services, maintaining order and assistance in disease prevention and control.
Xinhong’s voluntary medical team also participated, measuring body temperatures, disinfection and handling emergency services. Each volunteer was equipped with a small bag filled with masks, disinfectant wet wipes and a thermometer.
Meanwhile, all volunteers had their temperatures taken daily and had to show their green health code to prove they were certified healthy. They were also advised to keep a safe distance from visitors where possible.
Minhang operated several voluntary service stations scattered around busy areas related to the expo, including railway, Metro and bus stations. An auxiliary force was in place in case extra help was required.
An Internet technology company from the Hongqiao Central Business District provided robot services to provide visitor information on matters like accommodation and even serve as trade fair guides.
