Popular night market returns with a whole new look
THE Taipei-operated Shilin Night Market opened in Jinjiang Park in the Minhang District for a third year. This time, it is bigger, more diverse and less expensive.
The organizers said market research showed that previous snacks and products on offer didn’t suit local tastes. So stocks were changed. This year, 60 percent of snacks are brand new.
The most popular new snack is called “big mango” and has people queuing for about 20 minutes. It features fresh mango cut into small cubes and added to smoothies with whipped cream. One serving is big enough for two people.
Another snack called “coffin,” however, is causing raised eyebrows. The snack is hollowed, square-shaped bread stuffed with shrimp and diced vegetables.
“It tastes good, but the name is kind of weird,” said Luo Yuan, a visitor.
Parking remains a problem. Jinjiang Park has very limited space for cars, forcing visitors to park at a nearby Metro station or hypermarket and walk to the market.
In Taipei, the Shilin Night Market has a history dating back more than 100 years. It is a landmark in the city, said to offer the most authentic Taiwan snacks. In recent years, the concept of the market has been exported to the mainland. The market in Jinjiang Park will be open until the end of October.
