Police probe neighborhood burglaries

MORE than 10 families living in an old neighborhood in Minhang reported burglaries in a single night this month. The police said the break-ins at the Hanghua No. 4 neighborhood are under investigation.

A woman surnamed Lu, who lives in Building 27, said she woke up to find that the door of her apartment had been pried open and household cash stolen. She estimated the burglar, or burglars, struck between 2:30am and 4am.

She said she was shocked to learn later that at least 10 other families in the neighborhood had also been victimized. “I heard that a resident living in Building 31 lost a watch valued at 100,000 yuan (US$16,110),” she said, shaking her head in disbelief.

A resident surnamed Pan said she and his mother found cash missing from their apartment. They found the front door unlatched when they got up in the morning.

“An Omega watch, one iPhone and one Samsung mobile were taken,” Pan said. “We estimate our loss at about 40,000 yuan.”

Residents said they hadn’t considered their neighborhood unsafe and were surprised by the series of break-ins. “There is a chess room on the first floor of our building,” said a resident surnamed Cong, who lives in Building 27. “So the security gate to the building is always open to give easy access to people who want to use the room.”

Police investigating the burglaries said they haven’t caught the culprit, but they did point out to residents that the neighborhood security gate uses a lock type that doesn’t afford much protection. They recommended it be upgraded.
