A noise monitor has recently been installed on Laowaijie, or the Foreigners’ Street, to provide real-time data on decibels. The scenic street of restaurants featuring international cuisines is popular with expats and is most lively in the nighttime hours. Noise often rankles nearby residents. Businesses staying open late have been directed to use sound-proof window glass and remove outdoor speakers used to play music.
