Multipurpose card thins wallets
We have become a society of card-carriers — cards to pay Metro fares, cards to get medical care, cards to gain entry to local scenic spots, cards to pay for groceries.
The Xinzhuang Industrial Zone is conducting a trial program to combine multiple cards into one convenient card.
It must be a popular idea. More than 70,000 people living in and around the zone have already applied.
One resident who only identified himself as Qiao said he uses the multipurpose card at his local wet market. In addition to paying for staples, the card also helps him track the source of the food he buys.
“After I pay with the card, it automatically sends a code to my smart phone,” said Qiao. “Copying the code to a tracking platform, I can find the name of the companies that produced, processed and wholesaled the food.”
Shanghai Set Pay e-Commerce Co, issuer of the multipurpose card, said the concept is based on the Shanghai Tourist Card, which was issued by the local tourism administration in 2009. The tourist card can be used for discounts at scenic spots, restaurants and shopping malls.
The company said the card inspired it to add more functions, making it an all-in-one card for the residents.
Individual neighborhoods can customize the card by adding functions. For example, Xinfengyuan, a housing complex in Xinzhuang, said its residents can use their cards to access their apartment buildings.
“With the card, we can control access to the buildings, ensuring the safety of residents,” said Gao Lei, an official with the neighborhood committee.
Feedback on use of the multipurpose card will be collected and reviewed. If the pilot project is deemed successful, the concept will be extended to all parts of the Minhang District and possibly to Shanghai at large.
