Mooncakes a surprise hit with netizens

Mooncakes made in the kitchen of the Shanghai Mental Health Center in Minhang have gone viral.

The seasonal treat for the Mid-Autumn Festival is prepared by center staff.

The mooncakes feature contrasting colors, with fillings such as cheese, peach green tea, coffee chocolate, taro, sweet purple potato and plums rather than the traditional stuffing of bean or lotus paste.

The pastry treat is usually made every year for internal consumption only, and no one expected it would become an online sensation, said Liang Yan, who works in the center’s logistics management department.

Mooncakes aside, the center’s venue on 600 Wanping Road South opened its “No. 600 Gallery” last month, with an exhibition of 60 works by 15 patients, entitled “Lines, Colors and Stories.”

“Most of the pictures are abstract,” explained Chen Zhimin, a doctor who works in the “art specialty ward” and came up with the idea for the gallery.

Art therapy is an important component of rehabilitation work.

The gallery is designed to help promote public awareness about mental health and dispel stereotypes about people suffering from mental disorders.
