Man in 80s becomes a millionaire in lottery

A Minhang resident in his 80s, whose name has been kept confidential, was the sole winner for the 15-million-yuan (US$2.2 million) top prize in the China Sports Lottery.

The winner said he stuck to the same string of numbers for about eight years. He didn’t realize he had won until 11 days after the result was announced in early August. He took the news with composure.

“It’s been really hot in Shanghai lately, and I’m too old to have gone the distance needed to redeem my ticket right away,” he said. “I had 60 days, so there was no hurry.” The man was finally accompanied by his family to redeem the ticket at the lottery shop on southern Minhang’s Jinggu Road.

A customer at the shop for more than eight years, the winner said he would send a “red envelope” of money to thank the lottery shop owner Chen Bujun.

“He gave me some advice on the numbers to pick over the years, and I believe he shared his luck with me,” said the old man.

He said he would give some of the money to charity and to his children.

It is not the first time the old man has won the lottery, according to Chen. He once won 50,000 yuan and donated 10,000 yuan to a local senior nursing home.

Lottery ticket sales at the shop haven’t increased since the big win.

“Some simply believe that the shop’s luck has run out,” Chen said.
