Make-it-or-break-it hour arrives, students sit college entry exam
Some 4,000 Minhang students earlier this month sat for the grueling college entrance exam, which is held annually and is considered pivotal to a student’s future.
The exam stirs deep anxieties for both parents and students alike. Getting a high grade is viewed as a passport to a top university and a door to a prosperous career.
At one examination site, Qibao High School, red was the dominant color. Many teachers wore the color as an auspicious sign for good performances by their students. Teachers and students hugged one another before walking into the exam.
“We are relieved to see them walking into the exam site confidently,” said Chi Dahong, a teacher from Wenlai Middle School who led students there. “They are taking with them all the knowledge they have gained and all the maturity they have attained. I hope this point in their lives will be fruitful.”
A student surnamed Shan, who was enrolled in advance in a college and spared the exam, also showed up to lend moral support.
“I want to cheer for my classmates,” Wang said. “I am happy to see them in such high spirits.”
A junior student from Fudan University, surnamed Wang, was also at the site. He said when he took the entrance exam, there were college students there who encouraged him and he wanted to do the same for others.
Students who took the exam had their temperature taken and had to show ID cards and test permits before entering. Traffic and security authorities were on hand to maintain order around the site.
Construction sites in the area were closed to avoid noise that might disturb the exam-takers.
Every year, there’s always a student or two who forget to bring their test permits. Panic ensues. Traffic police got calls from Qibao High School and Tianyuan Foreign Language Middle School that parents needed to rush home to fetch the permits.
In one case, police put on their sirens and drove a parent home 30 kilometers through morning rush hour traffic to get a permit in time for the exam.
At Minhang High School, another test site, one student reported to the police that he had left his permit at home, but after digging through his school bag, he finally found it tucked away inside.
The relief in the air at the conclusion of the exam is palpable. All those months of cramming are finally over, and students can look forward to relaxing during the summer holidays.
One student celebrated the finale by going to a blood donation center in Meilong Town. Song Jiawei, from Dajing High School, said it was the first time he had ever donated blood.
“I have always wanted to do it since I turned 18, but I was totally occupied studying for the exam,” Song said, explaining the exam was a point on his journey through life and he hopes his donation helps someone on their journey through life.
The exam results are due to be released at the end of June.
