Incomer finds new home sweet home
When Jiang Xinhua first moved to World Expo Gardens residential community from her hometown in Jiangxi Province to care for a grandchild, she was homesick. Gradually, she came acclimated to her new surroundings.
The community was built to house people working on venues for the Shanghai World Expo in 2010. Today about 300,000 residents live there.
“I thought this place was too far from downtown and wouldn’t be convenient,” Jiang said.
Before her grandchild was born, she explored the area around her new home. Free from some of the downtown pollution and traffic, she came to see it as a pleasant environment. Many of her neighbors, relocated from dingy housing elsewhere in the city, proved to be friendly and helpful.
The community provides easy access to dining, shopping, wet markets, sports facilities, schools and health services. Buses connect with a Metro Line 8 station.
“I’m surprised that they even have a nursing home here for community elderly,” Jiang said. “Even better, a kindergarten is nearby, which is a blessing.”
She said that she was born in a watertown in Jiangxi and worked in a water-related company, so the presence of natural rivers and lakes in the area was heartening.
“I feel I have more than just gotten used to living here,” Jiang said. “I have come to love life here.”
