Greenbelt will brighten Metro station vicinity

A public greenbelt on the southern side of the Xinzhuang Metro Station is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.

The area, about the size of 16 soccer fields, will include areas from Xinzhu and Hongxin roads to the S20 Outer Ring Elevated Road. Small old companies, factories and some residences will be moved to accommodate greenbelt development.

According to the Minhang District Ecological Office, the new greenery landscape will feature gardens, undulating open fields, rockeries and water.

“We will enlarge the original creek near the Outer Ring Elevated Road to form an artificial moat in the greenery area,” said a project engineer surnamed Gu.

Wintersweet will be one major feature, giving residents a spot besides Xinzhuang Park to view the popular early spring flowers. Camellias, osmanthus and magnolias also will be planted in abundance, giving the greenbelt bright color in every season. In addition, aquatic plants such as wild rice shoots and calamus will be planted to improve water quality.

“There will be several bridges linking the greenbelt and access roads, and walking trails will be constructed,” said Gu. In the future, the greenbelt area will be linked to one planned in the Meilong area.
