Feeling a bit peckish? Give yourself a treat!

ALTHOUGH some people may still be fighting the battle of the bulge after overindulging during the recent Spring Festival, appetites need to be fed. And what better way than patronizing restaurants and cafes renowned for their food?

An online poll in Minhang recently highlighted some of the best places and foods not to be missed.

The most hard-to-get beef noodles

The owner of Qingju Beef Noodle Soup in Zhaojialou is a master of whetting appetites with a one-menu specialty.

The restaurant, which opens at 8am, serves only 100 bowls of beef noodle soup a day. If you aren’t there by noon, you are probably out of luck. The door closes when the last bowl of soup is sold.

Those who have tasted this specialty said it’s definitely worth the effort. The restaurant uses range-fed beef imported from Australia, and the noodles are all freshly handmade.

One happy customer, Xiao Zhuo, said she and her family drove from downtown Shanghai to the restaurant before dawn during the Spring Festival holiday just to savor the soup. She called it the best she has ever tasted.

“The beef was tasty and so tender that elderly members of the family could easily chew it,” she said. “The noodles were al dente, which is the way I like them. My mother, who is usually no big fan of noodles, ate the whole bowl of soup and loved it.”

The longest rice cake

Rice cake is a traditional Spring Festival snack because its name in Chinese sounds like “higher year” — the promise of prosperity.

Mr and Mrs Rabbit, a South Korean cuisine restaurant in Minhang, has also made the cake a symbol of longevity by creating pieces in an extraordinarily long length.

The owner of the restaurant customizes the cake in 60-centimeter-long pieces and recommends it be put into a South Korean flavored kimchi hotpot so that the cake is cooked tender and glutinous.

Apart from the rice cake, eggs, beef, mushrooms and other vegetables also go very well with the hotpot. Other authentic South Korean dishes, such as barbeque and roasted chicken feet, are available in the restaurant.

The most eye-catching cafe

“Ode to Joy,” a popular Chinese TV drama show aired last year, piqued interest in Cafe Kakao in Minhang, one of the main locations used in the show. The café is cozy and intimately decorated, giving patrons a sense of space and privacy.

The cafe serves lunch and dinner, but its most popular dish is waffle with ice cream. The waffle is served with two flavors of ice cream, fresh fruit and whipped cream. It tastes as good as it looks.

Latte is the most popular coffee in the cafe, with delicate artwork on top. The white cafe mocha is also widely recommended.

The ‘hottest’ restaurant

GUN8 Chili Restaurant fires off spice in all its menu items. This is a place for hardcore chili lovers. Even the ice cream is spicy.

Although the owner of the restaurant is from Taiwan, diehard customers insist that the food is genuine Sichuan cuisine.

The signature dishes here are boiled fish fillet in chili oil and mama’s knuckle soup. The former is said to “burn from your mouth to your stomach,” even though the chef adds chrysanthemum petals to the oil to relieve the spice a little.

Mama’s knuckle soup is about the only non-spicy dish in Sichuan cuisine.

“The knuckle soup tastes exactly like I had it in Chengdu,” said Jeremy Liang, a frequent customer of the restaurant. “It is rich, tender and full of collagen.”

The most authentic
Shanghai cuisine

Hejixiaocai Restaurant is maybe more popular among the older generation than among the young, mainly because of its Chinese-style decor and traditional fare.

But if authentic Shanghai cuisine is your thing, this is the place to go. Among the specialties are sautéed shrimp, sweet and sour ribs and pan-fried dumplings.

Many families choose this restaurant for dinner parties because it isn’t too fancy and there is something on the menu to please everyone.
