Crime crackdown nets burglary, robbery suspects
MORE than 160 suspects were detained in a recent crime crackdown in the Minhang District. Most of those taken into custody were accused of theft, burglary or robbery, said the Minhang District Public Security Bureau.
One of the biggest cases was a series of burglaries involving losses of nearly 1 million yuan (US$145,000). Dozens of cases were reported since last June, most involving nighttime break-ins, police said.
A man surnamed Hu became a principal suspect, along with two accomplices. Police said the men slept by day and roamed around looking for targets by dark.
Another case involved a robbery duo whose main targets were illegal cabbies. Late last month, a cabbie reported that two passengers threatened him with a knife, tied him up and forced an unknown liquid down his throat that knocked him out. The robbers stole cash, bankcards and a smart phone.
The police found a similar case reported two days earlier. Through surveillance, they spotted the suspected duo and caught them in an Internet café. The suspects confessed, telling police they assumed the cabbies wouldn’t dare report the incidents since they were engaged in illegal taxi business.
The police said theft and robbery cases tend to increase toward year’s end. They are advising residents and small businesses to upgrade door and window locks, and leave lights on when premises are empty at night.
