City teachers are accommodated

Minhang has added 536 new members to the team of teachers this year, with 335 of them from other cities, which has made accommodation a bit of a problem.
The district has worked with House Property Administration to resolve this problem and provide apartments for incoming young teachers with rent partly paid by the government.
The first stage of the project provided 105 apartments. The district provided three housing estates to choose from with Zhonghai Housing Estate in Meilong Town, Xiangtai Housing Estate in Beiqiao and Manxiang Housing estate in Pujiang on the list.
“Rent is far below the price on the market, and there’s nothing to be worried about,” said Zhang Wenyan, a teacher in a local primary school.
From beds to sofas and cookware, these furnished apartments allow a quick and easy move-in, which also reduces the volume of items teachers need to buy themselves.
“After three years working in Shanghai, the apartment now feels like home for the first time,” said Zhou Jinwei, a PE teacher in Xinsong Secondary School.
Rents in Shanghai were so expensive that it became a burden for many young employees, but Zhou only pays 700 yuan (US$107) for his room every month. This policy has attracted many young faculties to come to Minhang.
“I hesitated to become a teacher for quite a while because of accommodation,” said Xu Yanyan, a new math teacher in Tianyuan Foreign Language Primary School. “The moment I read that Minhang provided accommodation for teachers I decided to work there.”
Ma Guoming, deputy director of Minhang Education Bureau, explained that the district hires 800 new teachers each year and half of them are graduates. It is necessary for the government to help out on their accommodation issue.
In order to apply, one needs to provide evidence that neither of his or her parents or spouse has accommodation in Shanghai. The district gives priority to couples who are both teachers.
Minhang pays great attention to education. To encourage and motivate teachers in the district, the education authority awards teachers each year for their code of morality. This is the fourth year of this selection and 534 teachers in the district have been awarded so far.
