Mooncake mania

A pork-filled mooncake made by Jing’an-based Xiqu Laodafang food store was judged the best in Shanghai by a group of 40-plus tasters assembled by the Shanghai Consumer Council.

Mooncakes, traditional fare for the Mid-Autumn Festival, are typically stuffed with red bean paste or lotus seed. But many people in Shanghai prefer a shredded pork filling.

Xiqu Laodafang is a 165-year-old icon in Shanghai retailing. During this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, the store could hardly keep its shelves stocked as locals queued in long lines to buy mooncakes.
