Xiaomiao hosts thousands of young oak trees

FORESTRY workers in Jiading have planted more than 8,400 young Shumard oak trees at Xiaomiao Village of Xuhang Town, and they are to be relocated to public forests across the district in three to five years.

The trees have gained popularity in Jiading as some oak and maple trees had been planted in Xincheng Park before the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, and locals love the almost magical way they change color in the autumn.

Jiading Forestry Station has introduced 11 species of oak trees from abroad under a program with Research Institute of Subtropical Forestry, Chinese Academy of Forestry. Researchers will conduct adaptability research, evaluations, plant experimentally under quarantine, domestication test and authentication to make sure of safety before gradually expanding the program.

In a breeding base in the Xiaomiao Village, workers have planted 84 species, including sweetgum from North America and American red maple.

According to the plan, a batch of oak trees and maple trees from overseas will add color to the banks along the Huancheng River around the old town, adding to the evergreen color of camphor trees, which is the dominant shade tree in Jiading.
