Work on new canal starts in 2018
MORE than 30 billion yuan (US$4.5 billion) will be invested in tapping a new canal that crosses Jiading District to improve water quality and flood defenses.
Construction will begin in 2018 and cover Huating, Xuhang, Malu, Anting and Nanxiang areas.
According to the administration, the canal, Luowen River, will stretch about 120 kilometers from the east of Taihu Lake to Wusongjiang River.
About 33 kilometers of the canal are in Jiading.
Residents in Jiading have long suffered from flooding, and the canal will boost flood defenses by discharging water of 15 million cubic meters and lowering over 20 centimeters in water level in a day, said Lu Wen, an official with the Jiading Water Administration
The project is a part of program targeting an all-embracing water project in Taihu Lake area.
On completion, water quality in Jiading will also be enhanced from level V to level VI.
The canal will also enable bigger ships to sail in Jiading, resulting in a boost for the district’s water transport.
