Widower’s fabric art gives her life new meaning

IN July, Jiangqiao Town Culture and Sports Center showcased 45 elegant fabric artworks.

Among them, pensioner Jiang Guizhen’s fabric version of the famous painting “Eight Horses” was a highlight. The visitors were also impressed by her works entitled “Moonlight” and “Prince Nezha’s triumph against Dragon King.”

Jiang, retired in 2007, found her life hard after the death of her husband in 2012.

But her friends and relatives persuaded her to find something interesting to occupy her time and Jiang chose the handcraft she had loved when she was young. Starting from making crochet tissue boxes and embroidered sofa cushions, Jiang gradually fell back in love with fabric art.

Jiang picked up cloth from textile markets, mainly waste fabric for free.

To demonstrate her technique, Jiang fastened cloth on a hard plastic board, used scissors to cut out a favorable shape, stuffed sponge between the cloth and the board, used scissors to trim it well, glued the three layers together and finally used a pen to draw on it.

Talking about her “Eight Horses,” Jiang said: “Zhang Ruixian and I took eight days to make it and during the eight days. I ate only one meal a day. Every time my son called me to have a meal, I replied that I had no time and I even quarreled with him. I had to make haste for the show, and I was afraid that my inspiration might disappear during the meal.”

Expectation and efforts repaid, “Eight Horses” won a prize in the district’s art talent competition.

This year, Jiang joined a fabric art society in the Luyin Community to exchange the fabric art with other widowed seniors. Jiang even downloads fabric art classes from the Internet and shares them with members.

For Jiang, fabric art has entered every aspect of her life and she is hoping that more people of her age will decide to take up the art for the enjoyment it brings.
