WeChat account a boost for charity

JUYUAN community has launched a WeChat account for charity online registration.

Anyone who logs on may apply for charity in the community. “Internet plus philanthropy is an efficient way to let demand meet supply. It also lowers the threshold to take part in philanthropy. Why not go ahead with it,” said Gu Weiping, a community official.

At Gu’s office, young clerks are counting applications for 18 philanthropy projects. They put nearly 100 applications in different categories and verify all of them by phone.

Jiang Lili held birthday parties for people above 70 in the community. “I hesitated before I launched the project online,” Jiang said. She once worried whether people would agree with her or whether people would join her project.

However, around 10 people applied for Jiang’s project within 12 hours. They were willing to be on Jiang’s team. “It’s great to work with people who are on the same wavelength,” Jiang said.

Jiang is not the only person with public spirit. There are many ordinary people who are enthusiastic about the public good.

Rong Xuanjin is one of them. “WeChat philanthropy, it is cool, isn’t it?” Rong said. “We use WeChat everyday but never thought it could be used to do charity,” she said.

Rong teaches elderly people to use WeChat as an instant messaging tool.

She teaches them to communicate with texts or video calls and use GPS to identify locations.

There are 18 projects on Juyuan’s WeChat account open for application.

A grade one student suffered leukemia. Her mother hopes to find some warm-hearted people who will help the little girl with her study or play games with her.

Many people expressed their willingness to help the girl. Some enterprises gifted stationery and beautiful clothes.

Thanks to the good feedback, Gu Weiping has decided to improve the release of information and match demand and supply in the next step.
