Tips to follow for accident-free fun with fireworks
In recent years, so-called “cold fireworks” have been the popular choice for weddings and birthday parties as many people believe they post no potential fire safety hazards.
However, although cold fireworks are produced with metal powder, which can burn at a lower temperature, that can still reach above 600 degrees Celsius and easily set alight inflammable material. So don’t make the mistake of thinking that setting off cold fireworks can’t cause a fire.
It’s a tradition in China to buy fireworks and firecrackers to celebrate the Spring Festival holiday.
Here are some things to keep in mind if you are buying them this year:
1. Buy fireworks and firecrackers from legal outlets. Make sure the packaging is of good quality and incorporates certificates, producer names, addresses and instructions.
2. Avoid buying fireworks and firecrackers that present higher risks. Buy toy-grade fireworks which contains less gunpowder. You are advised not to buy highly sensitive exploding fireworks such as cherry bombs, which can accidentally explode when encountering friction or are dropped.
3. Fireworks and firecrackers should be stored in safety. You are advised not to buy a large amount of fireworks and firecrackers and should take care to ensure they are not stored at your home for any longer than is necessary. They should be kept well away from fires and gas and electricity points.
4. Be aware of the areas and times where setting off fireworks and firecrackers are banned. In areas where they are allowed, make sure you are in the open air and not in an inclosed area.
5. Never throw lit fireworks and firecrackers to crowds, vehicles and buildings. Do not throw lit fireworks from buildings, rooftops and balconies. Make sure your fireworks don’t get in the way of pedestrians or vehicles.
6. Strictly follow products’ instructions. Do not hold lit fireworks unless you are following instructions. Leave the lit fireworks and firecrackers immediately and return to a safe positions to watch them.
7. Children should be accompanied by adults when lighting fireworks and firecrackers. Parents and other adults should educate children for how to safely use fireworks and firecrackers to avoid accidents.
8. If fireworks or firecrackers malfunction during use, do not approach them to see what happened. Wait a while and dispose of them later or, better still, soak them in water.
9. You should remove all inflammable material from balconies, outdoor platforms, rooftops and courtyards to prevent them from being set alight by fireworks and firecrackers during the Chinese Spring Festival holiday from February 18 to 24. You should close windows and doors to prevent sparks from causing fire in your home.
10. Do not take inflammables and explosives to public venues or when attending public events.
