The many uses of Shanghai’s transportation card

SHANGHAI’S public transportation card is not only useful in the city.

It is also accepted in 11 cities nearby depending on its color.

Currently there are five colors — green, yellow, red, blue and purple.

Blue cards, as well as souvenir cards and specially shaped cards whose 12-digit serial number begins with “C” can only be used in Shanghai. The other four colors can all be used outside the city.

Green, yellow and red regular cards, souvenir cards and specially shaped cards whose 11-digit serial number begins with a digit can be used in Wuxi, Kunshan and Changshu in Jiangsu Province, Fuyang and Huainan in Anhui Province.

They can also be used on Suzhou’s buses and some taxis in Hangzhou.

Purple cards, souvenir cards and specially shaped cards whose 12-digit serial numbers begin with the letter “U” can be used on buses in Ningbo, Shaoxing, Huzhou, Taizhou, Changshu, Jiangyin, Kunshan and Huai’an, as well as taxis in Changshu.

In Shanghai, apart from its use on the city’s Metro, buses and taxis, the transportation card is also able to be used on the maglev, ferries, some parking lots, expressway toll gates, the Donghai Bridge toll gate, Shanghai Tourist Bus Center at Shanghai Stadium, Hongkou Stadium and Yangpu Stadium, and the bus transportation companies of Shanghai South Station, Shanghai Jinjiang Pacific and Shanghai Jiaoyun Bus, as well as sightseeing boats on the Suzhou Creek.

The cards can be recharged at all Metro stations in Shanghai, branches and 24-hour self-service banks of Pudong Development Bank and the Bank of Communications, and several convenience stores.
