The 10 icons that help put Jiading on the map
STEAMED dumplings from Nanxiang Town, bamboo carvings, Zhouqiao Old Street and Confucius Temple are among the 10 cultural icons of Jiading, according to an online poll.
Nanxiang’s dumplings, xiaolong, are a famous Shanghai treat, noted for being succulent, juicy and crisp, typically with a savory pork filling and a thin wrapping.
The wrapping of each dumpling has 18 wrinkles, a method handed down from more than 140 years ago. Li Jiangang is the sixth generation of makers maintaining production standards. He ensures that the dumplings are 2.5 centimeters in diameter, have a wrapping that’s 1.5 millimeters thick and contain 16 grams of stuffing.
The 10 icons picked by online voters include four historic sites and three handicrafts.
Street of memories
Zhouqiao Old Street is one of the iconic historic sites. With its Fahua Pagoda, stone street, old bridge and elegant gardens it has become part of local residents’ collective memory generation after generation.
The Confucius Temple in Jiading also gathered many votes in the poll. It was built in 1219 in the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and ranked No.1 as a place for Confucian pilgrimages in the region. The county school was also located here, the site of the highest education level in the district.
Apart from the cultural heritages, Jiading Library and Shanghai International Automobile City represent the modern elements. The lakeside library was rated the best public library in the world by “InteriorDesign” in 2013.
Automobile city in Anting Town has the only F1 circuit in Shanghai. The automobile museum and exposition center are also the first of their kind in China.
The other icons voted for in the poll were Malu grapes, Grand Gingko King, Guyi Garden and Qiuxia Garden.
