Teacher spends his spare time making connections
A public transport map put together by 31-year-old mathematics teacher Wang Zhewei has received 300,000 page views and 5,000 reposts after being posted on social networking site Renren.com.
Based on the Shanghai Metro map it shows dozens of bus lines which connect with Metro stations offering bus and Metro passengers alternative ways to get to their destinations.
Wang, who teaches at Yucai Middle School in Jiading’s Malu Town, said: “When I was very young, I took bus tours with my parents and became very interested in the moments when ticket conductors announced bus stops and sold tickets,” he said. “I enjoyed the feeling of slow life.”
Over the years, he became something of an expert in the development of public transport in Shanghai.
When a new line opened, a bus changed its route or was replaced by a newer model, he would write it down in his notebook.
Shanghai has more than 1,000 bus lines and he has taken a ride on almost all of them. “I have even taken the bus in some remote places such as Chongming Island and Jinshan District,” Wang said.
Wang would also take circuitous routes home just to learn more about how the city’s public transport network operated.
Last year, when Wang was taking classes at East China Normal University in Putuo District, he avoided the usual way to get back home by the Jiading No. 4 or No. 6 lines. Instead he took a different route every day.
In little more than a month he found more than 30 different ways to get back home, with the most complex requiring three changes of buses and a traveling time of two hours.
Whenever Wang takes a new route, he marks it on a map. Over the years he has used up several hundred maps and, not surprisingly, has come to know the city’s transport network inside out.
That meant he could draw his first Metro/bus map from memory, although it took him several weeks of revisions to make it perfect.
Wang also teaches classes on the city’s public transport and recently founded a public transport society where members often go on field trips using bus routes in Jiading.
Wang began to compile a pamphlet on the district’s public transport in 2011 and has revised it three times. It details departure times, ticket prices and the time between bus stops for all the bus routes in Jiading.
