Tasty treats in store at Lijiang Ecological Garden

THE TV documentary “A Bite of China” highlighted China’s food culture.

In Shanghai’s suburbs, original farmers’ food is a popular attraction.

Lijiang Ecological Garden is a true farmers’ home since all the food here comes from the garden itself.

Along the green fields in the garden there stand several glass houses.

In addition to the air-conditioners and fans, the roof insulation pool can keep the heat off.

In summer, seedlings are grown in the pool with small golden fish swimming to and fro, making the glass houses much cooler.

In the other three seasons, the glass houses are full of sunshine after the plants on the roof are removed.

Having a cup of Lijiang fruit tea while sitting inside the glass house and enjoying the rural scenery around, will make you feel totally relaxed.

Lijiang boasts an orchard of 20 hectares, so the fruit picking tour is a good choice.

During the tour you can pick the peaches and pears along the roadside. Fruit in Lijiang is sweet and juicy, since they grow in the open air. The fields are quite suitable for fruit with the help of organic fertilizer.

The newly renovated restaurant in Lijiang Ecological Garden keeps its original countryside flavor.

“Our dishes will stir your memory of the countryside,” said Han Jitao, the garden’s general manager.

“The chicken and duck blood we cook for soup is fresh and tasty because it comes from chicken and ducks slaughtered the same day.

“It is hard to find such fresh blood in downtown areas.”

The chef is a middle-aged woman called zhang Qin from the countryside of Cixi, Ningbo in Zhejiang Province.

She’s an accomplished cook despite not having had any professional training.

“I have no cooking secrets. Good ingredients are most important and I cook in a traditional way,” Zhang said.

After tasting the boiled chicken in Lijiang, a woman tourist said: “The dishes I tasted were just like what my mom cooked in the old days.”

And a student said the yogurt made in Lijiang tasted better than those of the major brands sold at supermarkets.
