Stone Boy knows the best places for tourists to visit

SHI Tongzi, or Stone Boy, is a Jiading legend and the Jiading Tourism Bureau has chosen him as their mascot for the district’s latest tourism guide.

The round-headed boy is popular with locals. On the tourism guide, Shi Tongzi is a cartoon image present at each scenic site of Jiading.

He wears a racing suit at Shanghai International Circuit or eats steamed buns at Nan-
xiang Old Street. At a strawberry patch in Jiading Industrial Zone he picks strawberries with a bamboo basket.

Shi Tongzi was a child living in Jiading in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). He risked his life to save the town by alerting residents to a pirate attack. His statue can been seen in Jiading Museum.

Animator and Jiading native Zhang Xiaoyang created the cartoon image of Shi Tongzi. Like many others, he was touched by the story.

Zhang, who studied in Singapore at the age of 17 and graduated as a Master of Fine Arts from the Royal College of Art in London, has his own animation film company.

Zhang knew Shi Tongzi was closely connected with Jiading’s history. “An interesting and brave boy is an appropriate figure for tourism promotion,” Zhang said.
