Shao knows just how to get your business started

Every day when Shao Si, now a successful entrepreneur who trains business-starters, opens his e-mail, he recalls the problems he had when he was seeking finance to start his own business more than 10 years ago.

“As early as my freshman year’s winter vacation, I created a campus website with a few of my classmates, which was loosely a company,” Shao said.

They sold software and helped people to set up websites to earn some money. At its busiest, staff numbers were in double figures.

Shao said the experience, though not very successful, paved the way for his future career in helping business start-ups.

After graduation, Shao quit the campus company and started another business — he became chairman of Shanghai Huaqiang Foluo Instrument Co Ltd. The company owns about 100 patents, mostly in the field of sensors and instruments.

When his company became successful, Shao started to work on a program supporting people wanting to start a business. “Business starters are in a poor situation — short of workers, money and other resources,” he said.

Shao’s company is located at the industrial park which has the most computer and mobile game companies in Jiading. The district government and a government business support program provide 50,000 yuan (US$8,000) of starting funds, free offices, affordable apartments for professionals and abundant public services such as gaming technology public platforms, cloud computing services and mobile game app testing platforms. Despite that, the government aid only covers a limited number of companies.

“What we do now is still very basic,” Shao said. “There are more than 300 companies with 4,000 projects in the industrial park. Among them, 100 projects will receive our support but only 10 will get our investment.”

To serve more business starters, Shao and his team have launched a mobile app — “Business Starter Weekly” — to help business starters.

The app had more than 100,000 registered users in just two months after its launch.
